Greek Monolingual

η (Α κίστη)
νεοελλ.
στρ.

Greek Monotonic

κίστη: ἡ,
1. κουτί, κιβώτιο, Λατ. cista, σε Ομήρ. Οδ., Αριστοφ.
2. είδος κινητού γραφείου, κιβώτιο που περιέχει όλα τα χρήσιμα προς γραφή, σε Αριστοφ.

Greek (Liddell-Scott)

κίστη: ἡ, κιβώτιον, Λατ. cista, Ὀδ. Ζ. 76· συχνὸν παρ’ Ἀριστοφ. ἴδε Elmsl.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: basket, chest (ζ 76, Ar.),
Compounds: as 1. member in κιστα-φόρος, -έω basket bearer (Thrace, Macedon.), κιστο-ειδής like a chest (H. s. ὀγκίον).
Derivatives: Diminut. κιστίς f. (Hp., Ar.), κιστίδιον (Artem.).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Perhaps with OIr. cess f. basket, (sheep)cot from IE. *kistā beside *kis-to- in OIr. ciss-ib tortis; in that case prop. "twisted thing, twisted container" (Fick 2, 12). - Other proposals: to κεῖμαι (κοίτη also = chest) after Prellwitz s. v. (against this Bq); to Lat. cūra after v. Planta a. o. (s. W.-Hofmann s. cista); thus Hendriksen IF 56, 21ff. a. 24ff., who connects also Skt. śeṣa- rest and (with Fick BB 2, 266) Lith. kìšti put in (against this W.-Hofmann l. c. and 1, 859, Fraenkel Lit. et. Wb. s. v.). - From κίστη Lat. cista, from where again the European forms, Ir. ciste m., OHG. kista etc. - Prob. Pre-Greek (cf. for the semantics κιβωτός).

Middle Liddell

κίστη, ἡ,
1. a box, chest, Lat. cista, Od., Ar.
2. a writing-case, desk, Ar.

Frisk Etymology German

κίστη: {kístē}
Grammar: f.
Meaning: Korb, Kiste (ζ 76, Ar., hell. usw.),
Composita: als Vorderglied in κισταφόρος, -έω ‘Korbträger (sein)’ (Thrakien, Makedon.), κιστοειδής kistenähnlich (H. s. ὀγκίον).
Derivative: Deminutiva κιστίς f. (Hp., Ar.), κιστίδιον (Artem.).
Etymology: Vielleicht mit air. cess f. Korb, Hürde aus idg. *kistā neben *kis-to- in air. ciss-ib tortis; dann eig. "Geflecht, geflochtener Behälter" (Fick 2, 12). — Andere Vorschläge: zu κεῖμαι (κοίτη auch = Kiste) nach Prellwitz s. v. (dagegen Bq); zu lat. cūra nach v. Planta u. a. (s. W.-Hofmann s. cista); ebenso Hendriksen IF 56, 21ff. u. 24ff., der aind. śeṣa- Rest und (mit Fick BB 2, 266) lit. kìšti einstecken mit einbezieht (dagegen W.-Hofmann a. a. O. und 1, 859, Fraenkel Lit. et. Wb. s. v.). — Aus κίστη lat. cista, woraus wiederum die europäischen Formen, ir. ciste m. Schachtel, ahd. kista usw.
