four, Lat. quatuor, Hom., etc.
Frisk Etymology German
τέσσαρες: -α (Hom. [attizistisch für τέσσερες? Wackernagel Unt. 13] u. a.),
{téssares}
Forms: att. τέτταρες, ion. ark. hell. τέσσερες, dor. nw. gr. τέτορες, äol. (Hom.) πίσυρες, lesb. πέσ(σ)υρες, böot. πέτταρες
Meaning: vier
Composita: Als Vorderglied in τεσσαράκοντα, att. τετταράκοντα, ion. hell. τεσσεράκοντα, dor. τετρώκοντα vierzig; auch in τεσσαράβοιος vier Rinder wert (Ψ 705; Risch Mus. Helv. 2, 19) u.a. Dafür sehr oft τετρα-, z.B. τετράκυκλος vierräderig (Hom. usw.), τετρακόσιοι, dor. -κάτιοι vierhundert; myk., z.B. qe-to-ro-we = τετρωες mit vier Ohren.
Derivative: Davon das Ordinale τέταρτος, ep. auch τέτρατος, böot. πέτρατος der vierte mit τεταρταῖος (Theok. τετόρταιος) am vierten Tage eintreffend (ion. att.), m. (sc. πυρετός) als Fieberart Quartana (Strömberg Wortstud. 74ff.). Kollektiva: τετράς (böot. πετράς) f. Periode von vier Tagen, Vierzahl, gew. der vierte Tag des Monats (seit h. Merc., Hes.); τετρακτύς, -ύος f. Vierzahl (Pythag.). Zahladverb τετράκις (seit ε 306; böot. π-), posthom. auch -κι viermal. Weitere Adverbia: τέτραχα, -χῆ, -χόθι, -χῶς u.a. (ion. att.); auch -χθά (Hom.); dazu Adj. τετραξός (Arist.), -ασσός (sp. Pap.), wie διξός, δισσός usw. — Weitere Einzelheiten m. Lit. Schwyzer 589 f., 597 f.
Etymology: Das idg. Zahlwort für vier hatte eine sehr verwickelte Flexion, die sich an Hand der einzelsprachlichen Zeugnisse im großen und ganzen restituieren läßt. Für das Griech. kommen folgende Formen besonders in Betracht. Nom. *qʷetu̯ores in τέτορες mit τ statt σσ, ττ nach τέτρασι u.a. (anders Fraenkel Phil. 97, 162); damit identisch arm. č̣ork‘, toch. A śtwar, B śtwer; mit Länge des ō aind. catvā́rah, got. jidwor, mit sekund. a in der Anfangssilbe lat. quattuor. Akk. *qʷeturn̥s in πέσυρας = aind. catúraḥ, lit. keturì, got. fidur-, z B fidur-dogs ’τεταρταῖος’; dazu neuer Nom. πέσυρες, wozu mit Reduktionsvokal πίσυρες (vgl. Pisani Ist. Lomb. 73: 2, 5). Lok. *qʷetu̯r̥su in Dat. τετράσι (neben aind. catúrṣu nach catúraḥ). Ordinale *qʷetu̯r̥-tos in τέτρατος, τέταρτος = lit. ketuĩrtas, toch. A śtärt, B śtarte (vgl. v. Windekens Orbis 16, 473) neben aind. caturtháḥ. — In τέσσερες kann wie im Kollektiv lit. ketverì, aksl. četverъ, idg. *qʷetu̯eres erhalten sein; nach anderer Auffassung (z.B. Bechtel Dial. 3, 156 f.) dagegen τέσσερες durch Vokalassimilation aus τέσσαρες, dessen α (statt ο) jedenfalls eine sekundäre Schwachstufe enthält (vgl. τέταρτος). Unklar τετρώκοντα (vgl. lat. quadrāginta?). — Weitere Einzelheiten m. Lit. bei Schwyzer a. O. und bei Szemerényi Numerals 15ff., 79 ff., 115ff.; für Hom. auch Chantraine Granun. hom. 1, 25, 114, 260; für die übrigen Sprachen außer Spezialwörterbüchern und Grammatiken noch WP. 1, 512, Pok. 642 ff. — Vgl. auch τράπεζα und τρυφάλεια.
