[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Η λ. ἀλέα, λόγω της καταλήξεώς της (-έα), πρέπει να προέρχεται από ρηματική ρίζα (πρβλ. λ.χ. γενεά < γίγνομαι, δωρεά < δωρῶ. ἰδέα < ἰδεῖν). Τέτοια ρίζα δεν μαρτυρείται στα Ελληνικά, αλλά απαντά σε γερμανικές και βαλτικές γλώσσες. Συγκεκριμένα η λ. συνδέεται συνήθως με το αγγλοσαξον. swelan, νεώτερο γερμαν. schwelen «σιγοκαίω, καίγομαι», λιθ. svilti «καψαλίζω, -ομαι». Η ετυμολογική αυτή σύνδεση ενισχύεται από τη γενικότερα αποδεκτή άποψη ότι η λ. ἀλέα αρχικά δασυνόταν (επομένως ο τ. ἀλέα, προέκυψε με ιωνική ψίλωση), καθώς και από το γεγονός ότι δεν μαρτυρείται παρουσία αρχικού F στα Ελληνικά.
