Greek Monotonic

ἀθρέω: (όχιἁθρέω)· μέλ. -ήσω, ευκτ. αορ. αʹ ἀθρήσειε, απαρ. ἀθρῆσαι·
I. 1. βλέπω με προσοχή κάτι, κοιτάζω ερευνητικά, παρατηρώ, διακρίνω, σε Όμηρ. κ.λπ.
2. απόλ. ή με πρόθεση, βλέπω με προσοχή, κοιτάζω, σε Ομήρ. Ιλ.· δεῦρ' ἄθρησον, σε Ευρ.· οὐ γὰρ ἴδοις ἂν ἀθρῶν, βλέποντας, παρατηρώντας, σε Σοφ.

Russian (Dvoretsky)

ἀθρέω:
1) внимательно наблюдать, пристально глядеть, рассматривать: ἀθρῆσαί τινα εὕδοντα Hom. увидеть кого-л. спящим; ἀ. τὰ πόρρω Arst. глядеть вдаль; δεῦρ᾽ ἄθρησον Eur. взгляни сюда;
2) замечать, соображать, взвешивать, судить Arph., Isocr.: καὶ ταῦτ᾽ ἄθρησον, εἰ κατηργυρωμένος λέγω Soph. суди же сам, говорю ли я как подкупленный; τοῦτο ἄθρει. - Ἀλλ᾽ ἀθρῶ καὶ ὁρῶ, ὅτι ἀδύνατον Plat. подумай об этом. - Да я думаю, но вижу, что это невозможно.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: v.
Meaning: gaze at, observe (Il.).
Derivatives: ἀθρήματα δῶρα πεμπόμενα παρὰ τῶν συγγενῶν ταῖς γαμουμέναις παρθέναις παρὰ Λεσβίοις H. (Snell Glotta 37 (1959) 282-287, cf. Renehan Gl. 49, 1971, 66.)
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: No etym. One compares ἐνθρεῖν φυλάσσειν H. and θρήσκω νοῶ H., θρησκεύω etc., but then the ἀ- is unexplained (zero grade of ἐν- was an explanation from before the laryngeal theory, which has nowhere been ascertained). The derivation from a noun *ἀ-θρ-ος directed at a goal, from IE *dʰer- hold (which was supposed in θρόνος) and α copulativum; further to ἀθρόος (Hoffmann FS Bezzenberger 78f.) is most improbable. On the use of ἀθρέω Prévot Rev. de phil. 61, 246f.

Middle Liddell

I. to look at, gaze at, observe, perceive, Hom., etc.
2. absol., or with a prep., to look, gaze, Il.; δεῦρ' ἄθρησον Eur.; οὐ γὰρ ἴδοις ἂν ἀθρῶν by observing, Soph.
II. of the mind, to look into a thing, consider, Soph., Eur., etc.:—foll. by an interrog. or rel. clause, ταῦτ' ἄθρησον, εἰ . . consider this also, whether . . , Soph.; ἄθρει Plat.

Frisk Etymology German

ἀθρέω: {athréō}
Meaning: betrachten, anschauen, erwägen (seit Il., vorw. poet.).
Composita : nur von ἀν-, διαθρέω finden sich vereinzelt ἀν-, διάθρησις.
Derivative: Ohne Ableitungen;
Etymology : Nicht sicher gedeutet. Seit Ahrens Kl. Schriften 1, 447 und Fick4 1, 468 oft mit ἐνθρεῖν· φυλάσσειν H. zusammengestellt, wozu ferner θρήσκω· νοῶ H., θρησκεύω usw. Hoffmann Festschrift Bezzenberger 78f. geht von einem Nomen *ἀθρος auf ein Ziel gerichtet, loshaltend aus, das idg. dher- halten (s. θρόνος) und α copulativum enthalten soll. Vgl. ἀθρόος. — Über Gebrauch und Bedeutung von ἀθρέω handelt Prévot Rev. de phil. 61, 246f.
