[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Η λ. τόλμη /τόλμᾱ έχει σχηματιστεί από την ετεροιωμένη βαθμίδα tol της μονοσύλλαβης μορφής tel- της ρίζας του τάλας (βλ. λ. τάλας) και εμφανίζει επίθημα -μη (πρβλ. θέρμη, χάρμη). Κατ' άλλους, ωστόσο, η λ. ανάγεται στον τ. tolă της δισύλλαβης μορφής telā- της ίδιας ρίζας με ετεροιωμένο το α' φωνήεν και συνεσταλμένο το β' και έχει σχηματιστεί ως εξής: τολᾰ-μᾱ> τολο-μᾱ με αφομοιωτική τροπή του -α- σε -ο- > τολ-μᾱ με συγκοπή. Στην ιων.-αττ., εξάλλου, απαντά και ο τ. τόλμᾰ με βραχύ -α-. Σημασιολογικά, η λ. τόλμη χρησιμοποιείται και «επί καλώ» και «επί κακώ», αλλά διαφοροποιείται από τα αντίστοιχα θράσος και θάρσος / θάρρος].
