German (Pape)

H.; in einem Orakel bei Her. 1.66 Τεγέης ἐπ. ἔσσῃ, wo es Sieger zu übersetzen ist. Man vergleicht gewöhnlich, was die Bildung des Wortes betrifft, ἀτηρός und ἀτάρτηρος.

Russian (Dvoretsky)

ἐπιτάρροθος: ὁ, ἡ
1 защитник, заступник, тж. помощник (Δαναοῖσι μάχης ἐπιτάρροθοι Hom.);
2 повелитель, властитель (Τεγέης Her.).

Greek Monolingual

ἐπιτάρροθος, ὁ, επικ. τ. αντί ἐπίρροθος (Α)
1. (κυρ.

Greek Monotonic

ἐπιτάρροθος: ὁ, ἡ, Επικ. αντί ἐπίρροθος·
1. αρωγός, βοηθός, υπερασπιστής, σύμμαχος, σε Όμηρ.· μάχης ἐπ., στη μάχη, σε Ομήρ. Ιλ.
2. κυρίαρχος, κύριος, Χρησμ. παρ' Ηρόδ.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: m. and f.
Meaning: helper (Hom.).
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Unknown. Resembles the synonymous ἐπίρροθος; cross from this and another word or "Streckform" (cf. on ἑκατη-βελέτης, -βόλος)? Acc. to Schwyzer Glotta 12, 15f. (with Ehrlich Betonung 54) compound of *ἐπι-τάρρο-θος = ταρσῳ̃ (-οῖς, -οῖιν) ἐπιθέων, -θέουσα [meaning?]; but -ρρ- for -ρσ- remains to be explained. Not better Brugmann BphW 39, 136ff.: *ἐπ-ιθά-ρροθος, to ἰθα- in ἰθαγενής. - τάρροθος (Lyc.) is secondary.

Frisk Etymology German

ἐπιτάρροθος: {epitárrothos}
Grammar: m. und f.
Meaning: Helfer, Helferin (Hom. 8 mal, Terp. 6).
Etymology: Dunkel. Die Ähnlichkeit mit dem synonymen ἐπίρροθος springt in die Augen; Kreuzung davon mit einem anderen Wort oder "Streckform" (vgl. zu ἑκατηβελέτης, -βόλος)? Nach Schwyzer Glotta 12, 15f. mit Ehrlich Betonung 54 Zusammenbildung aus *ἐπιτάρροθος = ταρσῳ̃ (-οῖς, -οῖιν) ἐπιθέων, -θέουσα; dabei bleibt vor allem -ρρ- für -ρσ- zu erklären. Nicht besser Brugmann BphW 39, 136ff.: *ἐπιθάρροθος, zu ἰθα- in ἰθαγενής. — τάρροθος (Lyk.) ist sekundär.
