Greek (Liddell-Scott)

πηρός: -ή, -όν, ὁ κατά τι μέρος τοῦ σώματος βεβλαμμένος, Λατ. mancus, αἱ δὲ χολωσάμεναι πηρὸν θέσαν, [αἱ Μοῦσαι] κατέστησαν αὐτὸν ἀνίκανον, ἢ κατά τινας τυφλόν, Ἰλ. lame, mutilated; blind in Il. 2.599†.

Greek Monolingual

-ά, -όν, Α

Greek Monotonic

πηρός: -ή, -όν, ανάπηρος σ' ένα μέλος, ακρωτηριασμένος, Λατ. mancus, σε Ομήρ. Ιλ., Ανθ.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: adj.
Meaning: suffering from an infirmity, of the eyes blind (on this Fraenkel KZ 72, 182), of the limbs lame etc. (B 599, Semon., Hp., Luc.).
Other forms: Att. πῆρος after Hdn. Gr. 1, 190; cf. Schwyzer 383).
Compounds: Compp., e.g. πηρο-μελής crippled (AP), ἄ-πηρος unmaimed (Hdt.; Frisk Adj. priv. 13), opposite ἔμ-πηρος maimed, crippled (Hdt., Hp.; Strömberg Prefix Studies 122), ἔμπαρος ἔμπληκτος H.; with transition to the σ-stems ἀπηρής (A. R.), ἀπαρές ὑγιές, ἀπήρωτον. H.
Derivatives: Enlarged πηρώδης H. s. γυιός (beside νοσώδης). Denomin. πηρόομαι, -όω, Dor. παρ-, to be maimed, to maim (IA., Gortyn) with πήρ-ωσις f. maiming (IA.), -ωμα n. id., also maimed animal (Arist., Gal.). Backformation πᾶρος n. infirmity (Alc.; uncertain); cf. κῦρος, μάκρος.
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Isolated. The usual connection with πῆμα (e.g. Bq, WP. 2, 8, Pok. 792), fails, as Wackernagel Unt. 235 n. 2 notes, from the vocalism: Dor. παρόω (Gortyn) etc. against πῆμα (Pi., S. in lyr.).

Middle Liddell

πηρός, ή, όν
disabled in a limb, maimed, Lat. mancus, Il., Anth.

Frisk Etymology German

πηρός: {pērós}
Forms: (att. πῆρος nach Hdn. Gr. 1, 190; vgl. Schwyzer 383)
Meaning: an einem Gebrechen leidend, von den Augen blind (dazu Fraenkel KZ 72, 182), von den Gliedern gelähmt usw. (B 599, Semon., Hp., Luk. u.a.).
Composita: Kompp., z.B. πηρομελής verkrüppelt (AP), ἄπηρος unverstümmelt (Hdt. u.a.; Frisk Adj. priv. 13), Gegensatz ἔμπηρος verstümmelt, verkrüppelt (Hdt., Hp.; Strömberg Prefix Studies 122), ἔμπαρος· ἔμπληκτος H.; mit Übergang in die σ-Stamme ἀπηρής (A. R.), ἀπαρές· ὑγιές, ἀπήρωτον. H.
Derivative: Erweiterung πηρώδης H. s. γυιός (neben νοσώδης). Denominativ πηρόομαι, -όω, dor. παρ-, verstümmelt werden, verstümmeln (ion. att., Gortyn) mit πήρωσις f. Verstümmelung (ion. att.), -ωμα n. ib., auch verstümmeltes Tier (Arist., Gal.). Rückbildung πᾶρος n. Gebrechen (Alk.; unsicher); vgl. κῦρος, μάκρος.
Etymology: Isoliert. Die gewöhnliche Verbindung mit πῆμα (z.B. Bq, WP. 2, 8, Pok. 792), scheitert, wie Wackernagel Unt. 235 A. 2 bemerkt, an dem Vokalismus: dor. παρόω (Gortyn) usw. gegenüber πῆμα (Pi., S. in lyr.).

Mantoulidis Etymological

(=αὐτός πού ἔχει βλάβη σ' ἕνα μέλος τοῦ σώματός του, σακάτης). Ἀπό τό πῆμα (=πάθημα) τοῦ πάσχω.
Παράγωγα: πηρόω (=κάνω κάποιον ἀνάπηρο), πήρωμα, πήρωσις (=βλάβη), ἀνάπηρος, ἀναπηρία.
