[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. < βρέχω. Η λ. βροχή συνδέεται σημασιολογικά με τα όμβρος, υετός, ψακάς / ψεκάς και νεοελλ. ψιχάλα. Συγκεκριμένα το υετός δήλωνε γενικά τη «βροχή» και ειδικότερα «ραγδαία, αιφνίδια και μικρής χρονικής διάρκειας πτώση βροχής», δηλ. την «μπόρα», ενώ το όμβρος δήλωνε τη «συνεχή, ασταμάτητη βροχή»και απαντά με τις ειδικότερες σημασίες «βροχή με θύελλα», «ραγδαία βροχή», «καταιγίδα, πλημμύρα, κατακλυσμός». Τέλος το ψακάς / ψεκάς σημαίνει «σταγόνα βροχής», «ψιλή βροχή, ψιχάλα» και κατόπιν γενικά τη «βροχή» — πρβλ. και το ετυμολογικώς συγγενές νεοελλ. ψιχάλα «ψιλή βροχή.
