(οῦ, ὁ (from Sophocles and Aristophanes down), a lamb: τοῦ θεοῦ, consecrated to God, ἀρνίον.

Greek Monolingual

αρχ. ιρλ. ūan (< oūan).

Origin: IE [Indo-European] [9] *h₂e/ogʷno- lamb
Etymology: Identical with Lat. agnus (avillus). OIr. ūan with initial o- (*h₂o-), OCS agnę (with long vowel and acute from Winter's Law). However OE ēanian, Engl. yean, Dutch oonen from PGm. *aunōn seems to suppose -gʷʰ- (but there must be another solution). *o- from ovis? Schrijver Lar. Lat. 39, 438.

a lamb, Soph., Ar.; ἄμνοι τοὺς τρόπους, lambs in temper, Ar.:—for the oblique cases, ἀρνός, ἀρνί, ἄρνα are used; v.

Frisk Etymology German

ἀμνός: {amnós}
