Βλ. και λ. ακ-].

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: foam, froth; chaff (Il.).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Cf. ἄχυρον chaff. Also, with different velar, Lat. agna (< *ac-nā) ear of corn, Goth. ahana chaff usw. (with the root of ἄκων). ἄχνη could have a suffix -snā (Schwyzer 327); for the -s- cf. ἀκοστή). Expressive aspiration (DELG s. ἄχωρ) seems improbable. But the connection with ἄχυρον (q.v.) shows that this is a Pre-Greek word.

Middle Liddell

anything that comes off the surface:
I. foam, froth, of the sea, Od.; of wine, Eur.; ἄχνη οὐρανία the dew of heaven, Soph.; δακρύων ἄχνη dewy tears, Soph.
II. of solids, the chaff that flies off in winnowing, in plural, Il.; the down on fruits, Anth.
III. ἄχνην in acc. as adv., a morsel, the least bit, Ar.

Frisk Etymology German

ἄχνη: {ákhnē}
Grammar: f.
Meaning: Spreu, Schaum, Flaum (poet. seit Il., auch Hp.).
Derivative: Davon ἀχνῶδες· ἄχνῃ ὅμοιον H.
Etymology: Zum Vergleich melden sich einerseits — mit anderem Suffix — ἄχυρον Spreu, anderseits — im Suffix dazu stimmend, aber im Guttural abweichend — lat. agna (aus *ac-) Ähre, got. ahana Spreu usw. (vgl. zu ἄκων). In letzterem Falle wäre also für ἄχνη eine Suffixform -snā (vgl. Schwyzer 327) anzusetzen mit Anlehnung an einen s-Stamm (vgl. zu ἀκοστή), falls man nicht Einfluß von ἄχυρον mit ursprünglicher Aspirata annehmen will. Weitere Lit. bei Bq und WP. 1, 30 m. A. 3. — Vgl. ἄχυρον.
