English (Thayer)

(ἐννεός) more correctly ἐνεός (L T Tr WH (cf. the preceding word)), ἐννεου, ὁ (it seems to be identical with ἀνεως equivalent to unused ἀναυος, ἀναος, from ἄω, αὔω to cry out, hence, without sound, mute), dumb, mute, destitute of the power of speech (Plato, Aristotle): ἐνεόν μή δυνάμενον λαλῆσαι, of an idol, unable to speak for terror, struck dumb, astounded: so εἱστήκεισαν ἐνεοί, stood speechless (Vulg. stabant stupefacti), Hesychius ἐμβροντηθεντες. ἐνεοί γενόμενοι. Cf. Alberti, Glossary in N. T., p. 69. In the same sense ἀπηνεώθη, Theod., from ἀπενεόω.

Greek Monolingual

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: adj.
Meaning: speechless, dumb, stupid (Ion.-Att.);
Other forms: Also ἐννεός.
Compounds: as 1. member e. g. in ἐνεο-στασίη speechlessness (A. R. 3, 76);
Derivatives: ἐνεότης dumbness (Arist.).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]
Etymology: Recalls κενεός, but without etymology. Acc. to Brugmann Festschrift Vilh. Thomsen 1ff. to εὖνις etc.; rightly rejected by Kretschmer Glotta 6, 305. Fur. 392 recalls νενός εὐήθης H. and further νενίηλος (also ἐνίηλος), but does it prove Gre-Greek origin?

Middle Liddell

dumb, deaf and dumb, Xen.

Frisk Etymology German

ἐνεός: {eneós}

Composita: als Vorderglied z. B. in ἐνεοστασίη sprachloser Zustand (A. R. 3, 76);
Derivative: Ableitung ἐνεότης Stummheit (Arist.).
Etymology: Der Form nach an κενεός erinnernd, aber ohne Etymologie. Nach Brugmann Festschrift Vilh. Thomsen 1ff. zu εὖνις usw.; dagegen mit Recht Kretschmer Glotta 6, 305.
