Ο τ. ὄψ, που απαντά μόνο στις πλάγιες πτώσεις ὀπός, ὀπί, ὄπα, προέρχεται από ένα αθέματο ρ., το οποίο μαρτυρείται στον αρχ. ινδ. τ. vakti «λέει» και ανάγεται σε ΙΕ ρίζα wekw- «λέγω, ομιλώ» (πρβλ. ἔπος, εἰπεῖν, ἐνοπή). Η λ. συνδέεται με το αρχ. ινδ. vāk και το λατ. vōx, vōcis «φωνή», που εμφανίζουν μακρό φωνήεν (βλ. και λ. έπος)].
