Etymology: Kann ebenso wie ψεῦδος, ψύθος ursprünglich lautmalend sein und hängt irgendwie mit der Interj. ψό ‘pfui!’ (S. Fr. 521; "ἐπὶ τοῦ σαπροῦ καὶ μὴ συναρέσκοντος" [Ael. Dion.; vgl. A.Fr. 21 M.]) zusammen; im einzelnen dunkel. Nach H. Petersson Et. Miszellen 20 zu bhes- blasen (s. ψυχή) mit gebrochener Reduplikation. Ob und wie ψέφειν, ἀψεφές usw. damit zu vereinigen sind, steht dahin.
