[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Μτγν. λέξη που προήλθε πιθ. με απόσπαση από προγενέστερα σύνθετα σε -βοσκός (< βόσκω), πρβλ. ανθο-βοσκός, γηρο-βοσκός, λωτο-βοσκός, προ-βοσκός, κ.ά. Εκτός της λ. βοσκός χρησιμοποιούνταν στην αρχαία και τα αιπόλος, ποιμήν, βουκόλος, οιοπόλος, που παρουσιάζουν διαφορές στη σημασία και στη χρήση τους. Συγκεκριμένα, το αιπόλος (Ομηρος) σήμαινε τον «γιδοβοσκό», το δε ποιμήν στον Όμηρο δήλωνε τον «βοσκό προβάτων ή βοδιών», ενώ μεθομηρικά «αυτόν που βόσκει πρόβατα ή κατσίκες», για να καταλήξει να σημαίνει τον «βοσκό» γενικά. Εξάλλου το βουκόλος δήλωνε τόσο τον «βοσκό» γενικά όσο και ειδικότερα τον «βοσκό βοδιών», ενώ το οιοπόλος, που μαρτυρείται σπάνια με τη σημασία «βοσκός προβάτων», αντικαταστάθηκε στη χρήση από το ποιμήν. Τέλος, στη Νεοελληνική χρησιμοποιείται κυρίως η λ. τσοπάνης για να δηλώσει τον «βοσκό» και ιδιαίτερα μάλιστα τον «βοσκό προβάτων και κατσικιών».
