Frisk Etymology German
τελευτή: {teleutḗ}
Grammar: f.
Meaning: Ende, Lebensende, Vollendung, Schluß, Ausgang (seit Il.).
Composita: Einige Kompp., z.B. ἀτέλευτος endlos (A. in lyr.); auch προτελευτή f. früher Tod (Vett. Val.), Rückbildung von προτελευτάω.
Derivative: Davon τελευταῖος am Ende befindlich, äußerster, letzter (ion. att., auch Pi. [ergänzt]); -άω, auch m. ἀπο-, ἐκ-, προ- u.a., enden, das Leben enden, vollenden, zu Ende gehen, endigen mit ἀποτελεύτησις f. Schluß, Ergebnis (Pl. u.a.).
Etymology: Isoliertes Verbalnomen, anscheinend von *τελεύω (wie κελεύω); vgl. noch τελευτή: τέλος wie κρατευταί (s. d.): κράτος. In *τελεύω will Fraenkel Mél. Boisacq 1, 368 ein Denominativum von τέληος (aus *τέλεσϝος?) sehen; wenig überzeugend. — Eine auffallende Ähnlichkeit zeigen toch. B klautk-’umkehren, wenden’, klutk- ‘sich (um)drehen’ (A lotk-, lutk- m. Dissimilation), die sich auf idg. *qʷlout-, *qʷlut- zurückführen lassen (v. Windekens Orbis 11, 195 f.; zur Bed. s. τέλομαι, τέλος). Zum Vergleich eignen sich auch die armenischen Nomina auf -oyt‘, z.B. erew-oyt‘ Erscheinung (neben erewim, s. πρέπω), die einen eu- (ou-) Diphthong voraussetzen, s. Frisk Suff. -th- im Idg. 28 m. Lit. — Weiteres s. τέλομαι, τέλος.
