Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: n.
Meaning: pollution, guilt, also expiation (Hdt.), ἄγεα τεμένη H. (Lesbian? Bechtel Dial. 1, 115).
Compounds: ἐν-αγής under a curse, or pollution (Hdt.)
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Mostly connected with Skt. ágas- n. fault, sin, but the long vowel of Sanskrit is difficult. Explanation as psilotic form of *ἅγος belonging with ἅγιος preferred by Chantraine - Masson, FS Debrunner 85-107; but the psilosis is unexpected (not "so as to distinguish it from ἅγιος").

Middle Liddell

ἅζομαι
I. any matter of religious awe:
1. like Lat. piaculum, that which requires expiation, a curse, pollution, guilt, Hdt., Aesch., etc.
2. the person or thing accursed, an abomination, Soph., Thuc.
3. an expiation, Soph.
II. in good sense, = σέβας, awe, Hhymn.

Frisk Etymology German

ἄγος: {ágos}
Grammar: n.
Meaning: Fluch, Blutschuld, auch Sühne (Hdt., A., Th. u. a.), ἄγεα· τεμένη H. (lesbisch? Bechtel Dial. 1, 115).
Composita: Zusammensetzung ἐναγήςfluchladen, schuldbeladen’ (Hdt., S. u. a.); davon ἐναγίζω mit ἐναγισμός und ἐνάγισμα, ferner die seltenen und späten Adj. ἐνάγιος (nach ἅγιος) und ἐναγικός. Das Oppositum εὐαγής (Parm., S. usw.) schuldlos wurde mit ἅγιος assoziiert, vgl. Εὐhαγης (Styra, Va). Daraus das Simplex ἁγής (Emp. 47; von der Sonne).
Etymology: Unter der Annahme eines Ablautwechsels wird ἄγος allgemein mit aind. ā́gas- n. Unrecht, Sünde verglichen. Diese ansprechende Etymologie schließt die sonst naheliegende Möglichkeit aus, mit den Lexikographen des Altertums (Et. Gud.) ἄγος als psilotische Form von ἅγος mit ἅγιος zu verbinden.
