[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Ως προς τη χρήση της λ. ἄμμος αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι πρωτοεμφανίζεται στον Πλάτωνα. Παλαιότερα, στον Όμηρο, με τη σημασία της ἄμμου χρησιμοποιείται κυρίως η λ. ψάμαθος, σπάνια δε τα ἄμαθος και ψάμμος. Η λ. ἄμμος πλάστηκε πιθ. από το ἄμαθος με αναλογική επίδραση του ψάμμος (ή, αλλιώς, με συμφυρμό τών ἄμαθος + ψάμμος). Πρβλ. αντιστρόφως και ετυμολ. του ψάμαθος από αναλογική επίδραση του ἄμαθος. Το γένος της λ. μεταπλάστηκε αργότερα σε αρσενικό (ο ἄμμος), γιατί η κατάλ. -ος θεωρήθηκε χαρακτηριστική τών αρσενικών ουσιαστικών (πρβλ. και ἡ πλάτανος > ὁ πλάτανος, ἡ θόλος > ὁ θόλος κ.τ.ό.). Διαλεκτικώς σχηματίστηκε και περιττοσύλλαβος πληθ. σε -ουδες (ἄμμουδες
πρβλ. ἆθος-ἄθουδες).
