[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Αβέβ. ετυμολ. Έχει υποστηριχτεί ότι ο τ. άρτος
είναι ουσιαστικοποιημένο ρηματικό επίθετο αρτός, που ανάγεται στη ρίζα αρ- του ρ. αραρίσκω. Με το ρ. αυτό συνδέεται ο τ. άρτος, μέσω της σημασίας «παρασκευάζω, ετοιμάζω» (για το ψωμί που έχει ζυμωθεί), αλλά και μέσω της κύριας σημασίας του ρ. «συνάπτω, προσαρμόζω» (για το ψωμί που έχει τοποθετηθεί στον φούρνο). Κατ' άλλους, ο τ. άρτος είναι δάνειο από ιραν. άrta «αλεύρι» (πρβλ. αβεστ. aša «αλεσμένος», νεώτ. περσ. άrδ «αλεύρι» (ΙΕ. ρίζα αl- «αλέθω», πρβλ. αλώ).
