[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Η λ. σελήνη (< σελάσ-νᾱ) παράγεται από την λ. σέλας «έντονη λάμψη, ακτινοβολία» με επίθημα -νη (< -nā), όπως και το λατ. luna «σελήνη» έχει παραχθεί με το ίδιο επίθημα από το ουδ. lux «φως, λάμψη». Η λ. σελήνη έχει αντικαταστήσει την αρχ. ονομασία για το φεγγάρι μήνη (< μήν, μηνός «μήνας», βλ. λ. μήνας) προκειμένου να εκφράσει την έντονη ακτινοβολία που ανακλά το ουράνιο αυτό σώμα (πρβλ. και φεγγάρι < φέγγος). Η λ. σελήνη, τέλος, χρησιμοποιήθηκε σε διάφορες δοξασίες θρησκευτικού και μεταφυσικού περιεχομένου (πρβλ. σεληνιάζομαι, σεληνιασμός), γεγονός που συνδέεται ίσως με το θηλυκό γένος της λ.].
