[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Ο τ. άργυρος έχει άμεση αντιστοιχία με το μεσσαπικό argorian και argora -pandes. Προέρχεται από αρχικό θέμα αργ- (πρβλ. αργός Ι) παρεκτεταμένο με το φωνήεν υ- (u-), το οποίο παρατηρείται και σε άλλους τ. (πρβλ. άργυφος, αρχ. ινδ. arjuna - «άσπρος, φωτεινός», λατ. argūtus «οξύς», ενώ άλλες γλώσσες έχουν γι' αυτό θέμα σε -nt (πρβλ. λατ. argentum «άργυρος, αργύριον», κελτικό -γαλατικό arganto, στον τ. Argantomagus) αβεστ. әrәzatam, σανσκρ. rajatam και πιθ. αρμ. arcat «σίδερο». Αρχικά δεν χαρακτήριζε το χρήμα αλλά το φωτεινό λευκό μέταλλο σε διάφορες γλώσσες, ενώ η Γερμανική, Βαλτική και Σλαβική δανείστηκαν άλλη λέξη, άγνωστο όμως από πού (γερμ. Silber, λιθ. sidābras, αρχ. σλαβ. sbrebro). Η μορφολογική αυτή ποικιλία του τ. επιτρέπει να υποθέσουμε ότι η χρήση του αργύρου στους Ινδοευρωπαίους ήταν προφανώς γνωστή, όχι όμως ακόμη βασική. Στον Όμηρο χρησιμοποιείται με τη σημ. «ασήμι», ενώ άπαξ μαρτυρείται στη Μυκηναϊκή για να χαρακτηρίσει τροχούς. Η χρήση της σπανίζει ως χαρακτηρισμός του ασημένιου νομίσματος. Ο τ. είναι αρσενικού γένους, πράγμα που συνηθίζεται στην Ελληνική για τα ονόματα των μετάλλων.

Etymology: ἄργυρος hat eine unmittelbare Entsprechung in messap. argorian (: ἀργύριον) und argora-pandes (aus *arĝuro-pondios? Krahe Sprache 1, 39; s. außerdem Mayer Glotta 24, 192 gegen Ribezzo, der Entlehnung aus dem Griechischen annimmt). Es geht zunächst von demselben u-Stamm aus, der in ἄργυφος (s. d.) und weiterhin in aind. árju-na- weiß, licht, lat. argū-tus usw. vorliegt (dagegen kaum in toch. B ārkwi, s. Pedersen Tocharisch 109, und noch weniger mit Specht Ursprung 114 in ārc-une mit suffixalem -une). Andere Sprachen haben dafür einen n-Stamm, der in lat. argentum klar hervortritt und mit Recht auch in aw. ərəzatəm und aind. rajatám angenommen wird (Vermutungen über den Wechsel bei Specht a. a. O., der aber in seinen Kombinationen weit über das Beweisbare und Wahrscheinliche hinausgeht); wieder anders arm. arcat‘ (wie erkatEisen). — Die formale Variation läßt vermuten, daß der Gebrauch des Silbers bei den Indogermanen jedenfalls wenig eingebürgert war, schließt aber dessen Kenntnis nicht aus.
