[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Αβέβαιης ετυμολ. Κατά μία άποψη, τόσο η λ. χώ-ρα όσο και η λ. χῶ-ρος ανάγονται στην ετεροιωμένη βαθμίδα της ρίζας ghē- «είμαι άδειος, λείπω» (πρβλ. χήρα, χῆρος) και έχουν σχηματιστεί με επίθημα -ρα, -ρος αντίστοιχα (πρβλ. ἀγρός, ἕδρα). Κατ' άλλη, ωστόσο, άποψη, το υγρό σύμφωνο -ρ- ανήκει στο θ. τών λέξεων, οπότε οι τ. χώρ-α και χῶρ-ος θα μπορούσαν να αναχθούν στην εκτεταμένη ετεροιωμένη βαθμίδα της ρίζας ĝher- «περιέχω, περιβάλλω» (πρβλ. χορός).
